Add Page Numbers, Headers and Footers

To add page numbers to your document:

1. Go to the "Insert" menu and click. A drop-down menu will open.

2. Click on "Page numbers." The "Page Number" window will open.

3. Determine the position of the page number (either at the top or bottom of the page). The default position locates the page number in the lower-right corner of all pages, including the first page.
To place the page number at the top of the page, click on the arrow in the "position" window. When the drop-down menu appears, click on "top." [Note the Preview window. A mark appears at the location of the page number selection.]

4. Determine the "Alignment" (right. left, or center) and click on your choice.

5. The  "Preview" window will confirm your choice.

6. Do you want the page number to appear on the first page? If YES, click the box in the location labeled, "Show number on first page." If NO, click on the box to remove the check mark, if one appears there.

7. After you have made all of your page numbering choices, click on the "OK" box. Window will close and the page number should be evident on the document you are typing.

HEADERS AND FOOTERS

Information located in the header and/or footer of the document will appear on each page.  Many times, instructors may want your name and other specified information to appear on every page.

1. Go to the "View" menu and click. A drop-down menu will appear.

2. Click on "Header and Footer."  Header and footer spaces, bordered with broken lines, will appear on your text page. A "Header and Footer" toolbar will also appear on your screen, just under the header.

3. Locate the text insertion point (blinking at the upper left corner of the header). Left alignment is the default choice for a header and footer.

4.  To change the alignment, click on either the "right align" or "center align" icons located in the center of the Formatting toolbar.  The clicking text insertion point will change position when one of these choices is clicked.

5. Enter the material for your header.

6. If you do not want to add a footer, click the "Close" box on the "Header and Footer" toolbar.

If you do want to add a footer, go to the bottom of your page.

7. Move your curser into the "Footer" box and click. The blinking text insertion point will appear.

8.  To change the alignment, click on either the "right align" or "center align" icons located in the center of the Formatting toolbar.  The clicking text insertion point will change position when one of these choices is clicked.

9. Enter the material for your footer.

10. When you've finished your footer information, click on the "Close" box on the "Header and Footer" toolbar and it will disappear.
